The invention of portable, hand held game consoles has changed how families think about travel. No longer to parents have to endure the constant chant of “Are we there yet?” from bored kids in the backseat. No longer to parents have to figure out how to keep their children entertained while they’re strapped into a seat. Instead, hand held game consoles can keep children quietly entertained during road trips. And the Nintendo DSi console is the latest and greatest of these hand held game consoles.

The Nintendo DSi is the third version of the Nintendo DS. It began to be developed in 2006, around the same time that the Nintendo Wii game system was shipping. The Nintendo DSi console was released in Japan in November 2008, and since then has sold more than one million units.

Though the Nintendo DSi is very similar to its predecessor, the Nintendo DS Lite. It folds closed with two screens, one of which is a touch screen. The new hand held game system uses Nintendo DS games.

There are some changes that have been made to the system, however. In an effort to make it more portable, it is slightly slimmer, has improved speakers, and the larger screens have five brightness levels instead of the four offered with the Nintendo DS Lite. The power switch has been replaced with a power button. The power button can also be used as a “soft reset,” allowing you to change games or go to the main menu without shutting down the system.

Two cameras have been added to the Nintendo DSi console. While they are simply a fun feature right now, allowing you to take pictures of your friends and turn them into aliens, it’s possible that future games will incorporate facial or motion recognition for game play. There is also a hidden SD card slot on the Nintendo DSi. It can be used to play AAC audio, store your pictures, or to store downloaded applications from the DSi Shop. The DSi Shop is similar to the Wii Shop Channel for the Nintendo Wii. It uses Nintendo Points, previously known as Wii Points, to “purchase” applications for either 200, 500, or 800 points.

One of the goals of Nintendo in creating the Nintendo DSi console was improving its portability. That’s one of the reasons the developers decided to eliminate the Nintendo Game Boy Advance game slot from the final design. It eliminates the backward compatibility of the Nintendo DSi, as well as the use of additions such as the Nintendo DS RumblePak, but allowed the hand held game system to be slightly slimmer and more portable, without sacrificing durability. As Nintendo was developing the system, they considered adding a second Nintendo DS game slot, but it was eliminated from the final design in favor of portability.

Like many other hand held game consoles, the Nintendo DSi console is a great travel toy. There are a great variety of games available, and its new, sleeker design makes it more travel-friendly than previous hand held systems. So when you’re getting ready for that big road trip, don’t forget to pack your Nintendo DSi!

Because video game consoles utilize the latest technologies, each time a new game console is released, improvements are made from the previous versions. Sometimes this means that previous consoles aren’t used anymore, but sometimes the changes are more subtle, so the video gamer has to decide for him or herself whether to make the decision to upgrade to the new game console.

With the upcoming launch of the hand held game console the Nintendo DSi in early April 2009, many people are asking themselves whether the changes made between the Nintendo DS Lite and the Nintendo DSi are worth making the upgrade, or if the Nintendo DS or Nintendo DS Lite is “good enough.” To help you decide whether to make the upgrade to the Nintendo DSi, it’s important to make sure you know exactly what changes have been made so you can decide if the benefits of the additions outweigh the drawbacks of the eliminations.

In terms of physical changes, the Nintendo DSi is slightly slimmer than its predecessor, though the screens are larger. The screens also feature five brightness settings instead of the four offered by the Nintendo DS Lite. The speakers were also improved for the new console. Finally, the power switch was replaced with a power button, which allows players to change games or go to the main menu screen without shutting down the hand held console.

One of the significant additions to the Nintendo DSi is the hidden SD card slot. The SD card in the hand held game console allows you to play AAC audio, store photos taken by the consoles two cameras, and store applications downloaded from the DSi Shop.

The applications are similar to the applications that can be downloaded to the Nintendo Wii system from the Wii Shop Channel. The DSi Shop uses Nintendo Points (formerly known as Wii Points) to “purchase” the applications for either 200, 500, or 800 points. The applications worth 800 points are marked as “Premium.”

The two cameras on the Nintendo DSi may seem unnecessary to a video game console, but Nintendo may incorporate them into video game play in the future using motion or facial recognition. Photos taken with the cameras can also be used as character profile pictures.

An elimination made in the design of the Nintendo DSi is the game slot for Nintendo Game Boy Advance games. This change was made in an attempt to improve portability. The elimination of this slot also means the Nintendo DSi can’t utilize the grip used to play two Guitar Hero games or the Nintendo DS RumblePak.

Nintendo’s game consoles and games are changing the face of video gaming. Literally. It used to be that video games were just for children and teenagers, but with recent consoles and games that appeal to adults, too, the demographic for all video game companies has expanded. The Nintendo Wii got everyone up off the couch to play baseball and tennis and exercise, and Nintendo DS games started to improve memory, basic math skills, and even taught people to cook! No longer are video games running and jumping on enemies to reach the end of the level; there’s much more to them now! With the upcoming launch of the DSi console in the western hemisphere, children and adults alike are counting down the days until they can get their new hand held game consoles!
It’s easy to see what makes the Nintendo DSi so appealing to everyone. Between the improvements made to the console, the Nintendo DS games already available, and the familiar Nintendo characters that remind adults of childhood, the Nintendo DSi is everything anyone could want in a hand held game console.

Nintendo has tried to expand the market with its newest hand held game console, as well as turn the DSi console from simply a game console into a tool that people can use to enrich their daily lives. It isn’t just about playing games anymore.

The Nintendo DSi has two cameras that can be used. The hidden SD card slot can be used to store those photos, play AAC audio, or store the downloadable applications from the DSi Shop. These applications, like the Moveable Notebook, take the hand held game console from a tool used to play games to a device used to make daily life better.

Video games can be used as educational tools, as well. The Nintendo DS game Brain Age, for example, is a training program designed to help improve memory and reflex time. The fun activities in the game are used to access your “Brain Age,” and if you continue playing daily, your Brain Age improves little by little.

In addition, games like Cooking Guide: Can’t Decide What to Eat? teaches valuable skills that have practical applications in daily life. It’s a digital cookbook that not only gives great recipes, but walks you through them systematically to help you make a delicious meal.

One of the reasons the DSi console will succeed are the characters introduced by Nintendo, who have stayed constant since their creation in the 1980s and 1990s. Names like Mario and Luigi, Yoshi, and Zelda and Link have become household names. Nintendo have managed to bring adults and their children together with a common interest.

In early April, people across the western hemisphere will be lined up to get the Nintendo DSi, the third and newest version of the Nintendo DS. The hand held game console is very similar to its predecessor, the Nintendo DS Lite, but the features new to the Nintendo DSi make it a great improvement.

One of the more well-known additions to the Nintendo DSi is the incorporation of two cameras. One is located on the inside hinge facing the player, and the other is in the outer shell. These cameras may seem unnecessary right now, but future games for the system could include motion and facial recognition to expand on game play, in addition to using customized pictures as character profile pictures. As technology develops, the cameras could become as important to game play as the controller is now.

The pictures you take can be stored on another new addition to the Nintendo DSi, the hidden SD card slot. It plays AAC audio, and can be used to store downloaded applications from the DSi Shop. The applications range from games to useful tools such as the Moveable Notebook, which lets you make notes and keep them stored for later.

The DSi Shop is like the Wii Shop Channel on the Nintendo Wii. It uses points, called Nintendo Points (previously Wii Points), to “purchase” the applications and download them. The applications range in worth from 200 to 800 points. Applications worth 800 points are labeled “Premium.” In addition, any Nintendo DSi unit that accesses the DSi Shop prior to March 2010 will receive 1,000 free Nintendo Points.

There have been a few changes to the physical parameters of the Nintendo DSi, as well. The hand held game console is 12% slimmer than the Nintendo DS Lite and the speakers have been improved. The screens are slightly larger, and have five brightness levels instead of the four available in the Nintendo DS Lite. The power switch has also been replaced by the power button, which also serves as a “soft reset” for the system. Players can now change games or go back to the main menu without needing to turn off the game system.

An elimination between the Nintendo DS Lite and the Nintendo DSi is the Nintendo Game Boy Advance game slot. The Nintendo DSi is not backward compatible as the Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite are, and the Nintendo DSi is not compatible with additions such as the grip used to play Guitar Hero: On Tour and Guitar Hero: On Tour Decades, and the Nintendo DS RumblePak. Many people, however, believe that this elimination is far less important than the benefits of the additions for the hand held game console.

I’m sure you’d like to hear more about the Nintendo DSi console which is why I have built a website all about it. Go on, have a look at it and see if there’s anything on the site about the Nintendo DSi console which is of interest to you.

The Nintendo DS is more than just a portable game system, it has become personal as well. Those who own this flip action gaming device have had the luxury of finding out that it can do more than just play games. Because people who play the purchased games by Nintendo usually want something more, there has been a spike it what is being called homebrew games.

Homebrew is another term for fangames, these games are created by gamers who basically take the games premise and create another game. There have been actions put in place to stop this kind of unlicensed creativity because it borders on copyright infringement.

In order to store homebrew games on your Nintendo DS you will need a third party storage such as the DSTT, there are interface cards that can be used in conjunction with the micro DS card. Some of the homebrew games include DSLinux which is a port of the operating system of the Nintendo DS. The GEOS (Graphic Enviornment Operating System) is useful for geoBasic, geoDraw and geoSpell and geoWrite Workshop.

MoonShell allows you to play movies. You can also play music in various formats such as Windows Media. You can hear a better sound quality in the movies you download and the music can be downloaded at a higher bit rate so it makes MoonShell the best way to listen to WMA files. You can also download images and text files. MoonShell also opens other homebrew games.

DSOrgainze includes the web browser and media player, there is a file browser and organizer. Eigenmath DS is a free computer algebra system, you can plot graphs, simplify solutions and solve linear equations. This homebrew supports multiple graphs and it has a catalog of functions available. It comes with a traditional keyboard and a standard one too. The Eigenmath website has all the information available so you can see how to use it with ease. The whole idea is to replace Texas Instruments and HP calculators.

Woopsi is supposed to help with GUI (Graphic User Interface) code, there are free libraries and source codes for this homebrew application. It is designed to give you a template to work with so it reduces the amount of work you have to do. Colors! is a digital painting application for the Nintendo DS.

All together homebrew games with a DSTT are a gamers secret weapon because you can download cheats before the games are on your Nintendo DS and once you get the game the cheats are interfaced while you play. This makes owning a DSTT Nintendo DS a much better option than before. There is tons of information on the internet and homebrew games are not just for programmers or gaming companies, they are written by those who have an interest in freeware for the average gamer.

There are plenty of ways to run a homebrew on a DS by using an SD card adaptor. One of the most popular is DSTT. Other good examples of DS flash cards include the R4, M3 and CycloDS.
