Nintendo 3DS Dropped to $169 at Walmart a Few Days Early

Nintendo has long been one of the most successful video game companies on the market. This success can easily be seen with the Nintendo Wii which took a large lead over Microsof’ts Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3. However, Nintendo isn’t looking to ride on the success of the Wii forever as they’ve already come forth to announce the Wii U and release the Nintendo 3DS.

While the Wii U won’t be out for quite some time the Nintendo 3DS has been on the market for quite some time. Unfortunately though, the 3D display touting portable hasn’t given Nintendo the same success they’ve seen with previous releases like the Wii and Nintendo DS. Due to this, NIntendo came forth not too long ago to announce that they would be dropping the price tag of the Nintendo 3DS.

To make the deal even sweeter, Walmart has come forth today to let us know that they are stocking the Nintendo 3DS for just $169.99. Now, you may be thinking: “isn’t this the same price drop that Nintendo announced not too long ago?”. Yes, but the official Nintendo price cut wasn’t set to go into effect until August 12th. I cant pick which of these three details I love the most all the miniature characters popping off the AR cards, Cammys purse made out of Quote from Cave Story, or the Street Fighter charms hanging off the bags strap.

For those interested and Im sure many of you will be Rob, who is the art director for GameFan, will be making prints for this artwork in the future.

Your Nintendo 3DS hardware cheat sheet

While you were sleeping last night, Nintendo trucked out a ton of details about the 3DS, all of which weve gathered here for your convenience and slapped commentary on.

Essential information:

Release date: February 26th in Japan. March 2011 for North America/Europe. Thats later than many expected, but Im happy well have six months to save up for the pricey system, and developers will have more time to polish their launch titles.
Pricing: 25,000 ($299) in Japan. Wii launched at that price in Japan, debuting at $249 in the U.S. If were lucky, well see a similar difference. Still, thats way expensive you could buy a PS3 for that price.

What you get with each system purchase:

Nintendo 3DS (in Aqua Blue & Cosmo Black)
Charging cradle / AC adapter
Telescoping metal stylus
2GB SD memory card
Six Augmented Reality paper cards for included games/apps that use the portables cameras

New capabilities (not including previously discussed features like the stereoscopic 3D, analog pad, etc.):

Enhanced, system-wide tag mode trades data with others for multiple games even for carts not currently in your portable. If only this came out in time for Dragon Quest IX! You can see this demonstrated in the video below.
Download content like game data and demos via Wi-Fi automatically while in sleep mode.
Hitting the Home button allows you to access other system features without shutting down your game. Finally! Ive wanted this for years!
Ability to transfer software purchases/downloads from a DSi system to your new 3DS. Its about time! Nintendo intends to implement a limit on how often you can transfer games and apps.
Virtual-console style platform that lets you buy Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and GBA releases (and possibly titles from other classic consoles) with support for new visuals that take advantage of the 3D display.

New built-in software:

3DS Camera – For taking 3D photos! Mostly for capturing goofy poses for a few minutes, then for recording vulgar images.
3DS Sound – Perhaps this is something that will turn the 3DS into a serious iPod-style audio player? At the least, I hope theres enough here to keep peoples attention longer than the DSi Sound app.
AR Games – For playing augmented reality titles with the included AR cards/markers.
Mii Studio, Chance Encounter Mii Plaza – Lets you create and trade Miis for your handheld. You can even create avatars based on photos you take! Apparently, you can trade Miis via QR codes and the enhanced tag mode mentioned earlier.

So, do you think thats all worth $250-$300?

Nintendo 3DS more powerful than the Wii?

According to new rumors, the technology that powers the Nintendo 3DS is more powerful than the Wii, and is right up there with the Xbox 360 and PS3. While we find that hard to believe, considering Nintendo always goes for simple, cheap hardware, keep in mind that the performance rumors come from developers who are working with the new consoles. Also, considering that 3D requires at least 50% more processing power, the 3DS will certainly be more powerful than any current Nintendo hand-held device.

Nintendo names Apple as its biggest competitor

In a recent interview with Forbes, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said that the battle with Sony is over — referring to that the Wii has won over the PS3 — and that the new enemy is Apple, with its ever expanding mobile lineup, now with an iPad as well, and together with the iPod touch and iPhone, they create some real competition for Nintendo in the mobile games world.
